He made a lucky escape after he jumped out of a helicopter as part of a training exercise ahead of the SAS’s first mission.

As depicted in the series, he and Jock Lewes (Alfie Allen) wanted to test jumping out of the aircraft at night.

However, his parachute broke just as he started to descend, and on landing, he severely injured his spine.

He ended up spending two months in hospital and was lucky to be able to walk again.

During his hospital stay, he made plans for his new unit which he would take to Commander-in-Chief General Auchinlek.

After managing to blag his way into the headquarters, he won over the hearts of his superiors.

Actor Connor Swindells opened up about his own fear of death after taking on the role.

Speaking to Express.co.uk he said: “You know, he lives a sort of life as a cowboy at one point, a mountaineer and other he was searching for adventure and he was searching for danger.

“I have no idea the motivations that would bring people to do it, I meet people like that all the time, I am the most death-fearing person.

“But I think I enjoyed thinking in the opposite, I gave myself a break from my own neurosis and worrying about death all the time.”
