According to the findings of a new survey, Suzuki achieved the highest brand rating for its reliability with 94.7 percent.

The brand’s Vitara small SUV received a staggering 99.3 percent reliability score, with the Swift small car also getting a near-perfect mark.

The data, from What Car?, found that Japanese brands occupied six of the top 10 most reliable brand positions.

However, at the other end of the scale, Citroën and Land Rover received the lowest brand reliability scores, of 60.3 percent and 61.3 percent respectively.

Small cars had the highest overall reliability ratings, with the Honda Jazz achieving a perfect 100 percent score.

In addition to the Honda Jazz, the Kia Niro Hybrid (2016-2022) and the Kia Soul (2014-2019) also gained a 100 percent score.

Luxury SUVs had the lowest average score of less than 70 percent, with the Land Rover Discovery featuring the worst rating of all at 47.8 percent.

As part of the research, almost 25,000 car owners were surveyed and asked to rate the most reliable used cars between six and 20 years old.

More prestige brands including Tesla, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar appeared in the bottom 10 most reliable brands, all receiving less than 77 percent.

What Car? consumer editor Claire Evans commented on the data, saying it was vital for drivers to get a car which can match their needs and last a long time.

She said: “As the rise in living costs becomes ever more acute, buyers are turning to used cars over new models.

“Despite the potential cost savings, used cars are more expensive to buy than a year ago, and reliability is more important than ever if you don’t want to be hit by expensive and potentially time-consuming repair bills.”

Of the older car drivers surveyed, 26.5 percent of owners said their car had gone wrong in the past 24 months.

Around one in eight cars were repaired under warranty, with most repairs costing motorists less than £500.

Shockingly, six and a half percent of car owners were forced to pay out more than £1,500 to get their cars fixed.
