Now aged 71, Princess Anne is known as one of the hardest working members of the Royal Family, and her fashion has certainly evolved as she has grown up. As the only daughter of the Queen with three brothers, Anne was the only young woman in the Royal Family in her youth before her brothers married their respective wives. Therefore, there was a lot of focus and attention on her outfits during royal engagements.
The Princess Royal is one of the most thrifty and frugal royals, and her fashion nowadays certainly reflects this.
Daena Borrowman, Marketing Manager at jewellerybox, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about Princess Anne’s fashion evolution.
Daena said: “Since the time she began her first royal engagements, Princess Anne has presented what she proudly describes as a rather atypical image of a Princess.
“While the Princess Royal can mesmerise one and all when she dons glamorous gowns and tiaras, she is most herself in jeans, wellies and a Barbour.

“She is known to be the most hard-working royal and her outfits completely reflect this.
“Far from the pretentious fuss and frills of the typical royal wardrobe, Princess Anne has her own sense of style which marries the classic, the timeless and the retro with the equestrian and the athletic.
“Back in the 60s, the teenage Princess Anne typified the ultimate posh girl, wearing short skirts, polo necks, bold sweaters and tweed sets.
“In the 1970s and 1980s, she took to psychedelic prints, florals, chiffon dresses, ruffles and voluminous sleeves, large collars and power pantsuits.

“At her first wedding in 1973, she broke away from the typical royal wedding dress, instead wearing a unique Tudor inspired wedding dress with trumpet sleeves.
“In the 1990s, Princess Anne adopted block colours, two pieces and oversized coats.
“Throughout her life, Princess Anne has rarely been seen without a scarf, wearing them sometimes as headscarves but mainly as neckerchiefs on almost every public occasion she has attended.
“True to royal form, the Princess Royal loves hats but has made the fashion of hat-wearing her own by wearing less feminine and more unconventional hats than her mother and grandmother by favouring wide-brimmed hats, baker boy hats, floppy hats and jockey caps.
“Right from her teenage years, Princess Anne has shared her mother, the Queen’s, fashion philosophy that a royal needs to be seen to be believed – she embraces vibrant, eye-catching colours to stand out in a crowd.
“While she has inherited the Queen’s love for brooches, she has built up her own collection of quirky brooches including her favoured dainty gold horse brooch she has owned since the 1980s.
“Though every British royal is partial to pearls, Princess Anne has stood out for her pearl chokers.
“The Princess doesn’t get the credit she deserves for being the original wardrobe recycler of the Royal Family, long before the Duchess of Cambridge hit the scene.
“She has re-worn coats and dresses in her 60s and now her 70s, with the same grace and ease that she first wore the very same outfits in her 20s.
“One can safely say Princess Anne makes her outfits work as hard as she does because she is known to repeat entire outfits the exact same way they were styled when she wore them the first time, many decades ago, with the rare swapping of a hat or the addition of new accessories.
“Though she was renowned for making fashion statements in her younger years, she recently made headlines for her edgy Balenciaga-esque Adidas visor sunglasses, paired with her idiosyncratic bouffant hairdo.
“Being a long-time sportsperson, functionality has been evident in her style through the ages and now, even in her 70s, she has stayed true to herself.
“She is the most underrated sartorial icon of the British Royal Family.”
