(CNN) — Joe Biden is turning 80 this weekend, but the big bash at the White House will be for a more youthful occasion: Naomi Biden, the president’s oldest granddaughter, is set to marry Peter Neal on the White House South Lawn on Saturday.
The bride
Naomi Biden, 28, is the eldest of the three daughters of Hunter Biden and Kathleen Buhle, who divorced in 2017. She is named for her father’s sister, who was killed in a 1972 car crash along with their mother, Neilia.
Naomi Biden has worked since 2021 for the Washington, D.C., law firm Arnold & Porter, where she is an associate specializing in international arbitration.
She received a bachelor’s degree in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016 and a law degree from Columbia in 2020. She was a Senate page as a teenager and also had internships at Tom Ford and Creative Artists Agency.
The groom
Peter Neal, 25, works at the Georgetown University Law Center on National Security. He has a bachelor’s degree in political communications from George Washington University and a law degree, received this year, from the University of Pennsylvania.
His parents, William and Mary Neal, are orthopedic surgeons who live in Jackson, Wyo. A standout Nordic skier, Peter attended Burke Mountain Academy, a Vermont prep school that attracts top-level youth skiers.
He is one of four siblings. His eldest brother, Willie, was also an elite youth skier and in 2009, at age 19, was killed when he was struck by a car while roller-skiing near a training center in Maine. Willie had been an intern to Sen. John Kerry and at age 18 was Wyoming’s delegate to the Democratic National Convention.
Naomi Biden and Peter Neal reportedly met in 2018. They announced their engagement in September 2021 and have been living in the White House since August of this year. Neal most likely crossed paths with Joe Biden before, having been an intern in the Obama White House in 2015.
The wedding
The event will consist of three parts, a person familiar with the planning told CNN. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. ET on the South Lawn — a location that in the history of White House weddings has never before been used. There will be no tent, the source confirms, which could make for a chilly morning; temperatures for Saturday are forecast in the mid-40s.
Following the exchange of vows, a luncheon for the families and the wedding party will take place in the White House. In the evening, guests will return for an indoor reception of dessert and dancing.
The wedding planner is Bryan Rafanelli, who oversaw seven state dinners during Barack Obama’s presidency as well as the 2010 wedding of Chelsea Clinton.
The dress
Naomi Biden’s wedding gown designer has not yet been revealed, though several fashion insiders contacted by CNN speculate the job went to Ralph Lauren. Joe Biden is partial to Lauren’s suits, and Jill Biden has also been photographed wearing the label. In March, Neal, Naomi Biden and her sister Finnegan, 23, attended Ralph Lauren’s Fall 2022 fashion show in New York City, which sparked most of the chatter that at least one of her wedding outfits will be by the designer.
