Chester West and Chester Council has been named Britain’s most challenging place to park with just 354 parking permits for 292,000 people, a ratio of just 0.12 percent.
The council area covers around 350 square miles of countryside and rural landscapes, as well as the City of Chester with many experiencing trouble finding a spot to park.
Problems can also be seen in the neighbouring council of Cheshire East, which is the second-worst place for residential parking.
Only 0.17 percent of people aged over 17 living in the area have access to council-allocated parking, according to a Freedom of Information request from Auto Trader.
There are just 560 permits for more than 325,000 residents, and despite having huge transport hubs like Crewe train station and links through Wales and most of England, dependency on driving is still present.
Of the top 10 areas with the worst access to parking, Northern councils occupy six places including Wakefield (0.5 percent), Manchester (1.35 percent), Sheffield (1.46 percent) and Leeds (1.76 percent).
Erin Baker, editorial director at Auto Trader, commented: “People choose to sell their car on Auto Trader for a variety of reasons, and it’s not surprising that we’re seeing the difficulty of residential parking could factor into people’s decision to sell their vehicle.
“You only have to briefly scroll through social media to find somebody complaining about the parking situation in their hometown.
“Whether it’s a matter of not receiving a residential parking permit from the local council or the nearest car park being too expensive, this research proves how difficult it can be for residents to park their vehicles close to their home.”
Unsurprisingly, English local authorities appear in the top 30 list more than other areas as the country has more unitary authorities and councils than Scotland and Wales.
The research also found that seven of the top 30 worst parking areas in the UK are in London, with Bexley only seeing 1.97 percent of adult residents having a parking permit.
Only two Scottish regions feature in the top 30 worst places to park, including Glasgow in 21st and Aberdeen in 24th.
Only 2.85 percent of residents in Glasgow City Council have a parking permit, while 3.65 percent of people in Aberdeen received a residential licence.
Similarly, Newport is the only Welsh area to appear on the list, although it ranked much higher than the Scottish regions, coming in fifth.
The city council allocated 1,647 permits to its 125,629 residents of driving age last year, meaning just 1.31 percent of Newport adult residents have easy access to park their vehicles.
