“If there’s no root lift, you simply won’t get the volume elsewhere, which is why root sprays and volumising mousses work best,” says Neil, who recommends working the Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Superlift Volumising Spray through the roots of towel-dried hair before blow drying with a round brush.
“Use a blast from the cold shot button on your hairdryer to set the hair and pin each section,” says Neil. “All importantly, make sure that the roots are completely dry.”
Alternatively, rough dry your hair and use a large curling tong, setting the waves with hairspray and pinning them for 30 minutes before gently brushing your hair out. Or follow the advice of content creator Olivia Daytonn who uses the Dyson Airwrap and recommends using both the hot and cold shots to make the curl last longer.

“For extra lift along the front hairline, use a wide tooth comb to lift the hair up a couple of centimetres away from the roots, mist with hairspray and blast with heat,” Neil adds.
Extensions may be necessary if you have really fine hair while Neil recommends hair steaming for Afro hair to soften it prior to creating this voluminous look. “You can do this at home by adding a treatment mask to your hair after shampooing and wrapping your head in cling film for 20 minutes,” he says. “Then sleep with your hair wrapped flat in a silk scarf or blow dry it out with a large round bristle brush.”
The XXL bombshell blowout doesn’t have to be worn loose all the time, either, as Dua Lipa’s thick wavy mane and high ponytail prove. A signature look of late, she’s chosen the style for both the video of the Barbie theme song Dance The Night and her Versace collaboration.
