Q: I really enjoy driving my Tesla 3, with its many enhanced safety features and AI-like tools. It’s fun for me as a software developer, but many of my less computer savvy (and potential luddite) friends have difficulty mastering their new cars. My car’s manual is only available online. At well over 200 pages, who really reads this??? The net result is that a lot of the stuff is not understood and does not get used.
And having rented several cars recently, I find there is no consistency in safety features between brands. Manufacturers need to provide a brief written “getting started guide” to help drivers use the vehicles. This would make for safer and saner driving.

A: You make excellent points.
Q: I am new to motorcycle riding on the freeway. On my southbound approach to Highway 101 near Oakland Road in San Jose, I noticed some bumpy road, coupled with standing water. I immediately recognized this trouble spot from reading your column. Thank you for the heads up in this hectic world! Additionally, I had a relevant anecdote for my dad when I made it to San Diego County!
Jeremey Gorman, San Leandro
A: So glad it helped keep you safe. And in road updates in your area, San Leandro, Caltrans has scheduled nighttime closures for paving work this week. The closures will run from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. They include:
June 26, 27: East 14th Street from Callan Avenue/Davis Street and Highway 12 to Juana Avenue and Davis Street from Dan Niemi Way/Hays Street to East 14th Street.
June 28, 29: East 14th Street from Sybil Avenue to Cornwall Way/Blossom Way.
This work is part of an overall paving project that will continue into the end of the year.
Q: I have a hybrid plug-in car with a push button on and off. Twice I have exited the car without turning off the engine, possibly since it’s so quiet I didn’t realize it was still running. Once I left it on for 3 hours and another time for about 15 minutes while shopping. I was shocked each time to return and realize the car was still on. I assume that if it happened in a garage and used up the electrical charge, it would revert to gas, sending carbon monoxide into the garage or home. My hack is to have the radio on in the car so I know that if it’s turned off, I have turned my engine off, too.
Please don’t sign my name, I haven’t told my spouse yet about the 3-hour debacle.

A: It’s good you figured out a trick that works for you. Your identity is safe with me.
