They’ve somehow managed to make Miss Trunchball even more terrifying.

Matilda fans, our time is coming – there’s a musical adaptation headed to Netflix.

Sony Pictures Releasing

The adaptation is an adaptation of the Tony and Olivier-winning stage show, which is of course an adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel (try saying that five times fast). The musical, which is set in UK like the novel was, will feature the original songs from the stage show.

The first trailer of Matilda: The Musical was released today, and Crunchem Hall already looks so terrifying, complete with surveillance cameras.

Netflix

You already know the chokey in this version is gonna be next level.

And the casting is so, so good – here’s who we’ve seen so far, and how they look alongside the characters in the ’90s adaptation we all know and love.

First up, Matilda, the young prodigy.

Netflix / Sony Pictures Releasing

Our main girl is played by newcomer Alisha Weir, who already has quite a range of credits to her name – she lent her voice to the English version of Two by Two: Overboard!, played Laura in Darklands, and appeared in the horror Don’t Leave Home.

Then we’ve got everyone’s favourite fictional teacher, Miss Honey.

Netflix / Sony Pictures Releasing

Played by BAFTA winner Lashana Lynch, who you probably know best as Monica Rambeau from the MCU or Nomi from Bond. Just look at that baby blue dress and cardi combo and Lashana’s expression – classic Miss Honey.

And of course Miss Trunchball.

Netflix / Sony Pictures Releasing

Would you ever guess that that’s THE Emma Thompson?! The last time Emma Thompson mixed prosthetics and children was when she was Nanny McPhee, so it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing a very different side of her here.

Matilda’s parents look just as awful as you’d imagine – here’s Mr Wormwood dealing with the result of Matilda deciding to teach him a lesson.

Netflix / Sony Pictures Releasing

Matilda’s dad is played by Stephen Graham, who knows a thing or two about playing a baddie; he was Combo in This Is England and Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire.

And Matilda’s mum is rocking her signature “you chose books, I chose looks” style.

Netflix / Sony Pictures Releasing

Mrs Wormwood is played by Andrea Riseborough who you might recognise from Battle of the Sexes and Birdman, and this isn’t her first Netflix project – she was Eve in Bloodline.

The teaser doesn’t introduce all the kids, but we can expect a harrowing chocolate cake scene with Bruce Bogtrotter.

Netflix / Sony Pictures Releasing

Which will hopefully be followed by an empowering musical number. Brucie’s played by Charlie Hodson-Prior, and according to IMBD, this is his first role!

And of course Amanda Thripp and her pigtails.

Netflix / Sony Pictures Releasing

Amanda’s also played by a newcomer: Winter Jarrett-Glasspool.

Matilda: The Musical will be on Netflix in December. Let us know your thoughts so far in the comments!
