Have you ever printed your boarding pass and noticed an SSSS code on it? If you have, you may have thought it was a mistake. Or, maybe you were flying back to the United States and only noticed it once you got to security. Here’s what the SSSS code means and what to do if you get this code on an upcoming flight.
What Does The SSSS Code Mean?
Used by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the SSSS code stands for ‘Secondary Security Screening Selection,’ which can also be known as ‘the quad’ due to the four letters. You have been selected for further security screening if you see this on your boarding pass. This can include additional luggage inspections, pat-downs, and other security checks before boarding.
Airlines send your personal information, such as name and date of birth, to the TSA. The TSA then checks your information with the Secure Flight program and other databases.
What Happens If You See SSSS On Your Boarding Pass?
While you won’t know if you’ve been selected for SSSS until you see your boarding pass, there may be warning signs. For instance, you may not be able to check-in online. You may also have problems with the self-check-in kiosks.
Once you get to security, an agent will likely ask you to step aside for the extra security check. This can take quite a bit of extra time, so arriving early for your flight is recommended. Though, because the search will likely take more time, you may be able to ‘jump ahead’ of the queue to where an agent can screen you. However, you may be subject to additional wait times, depending on how extensive the search is.
You may be asked to pass through multiple scanners, have a full body scan, unpack your belongings, and have your items and yourself swabbed. You may also be asked to turn on all electronic devices. For this reason, it is recommended to travel with fully charged electronics.
Note that SSSS is only used on flights within the United States and international flights bound for the United States. Travelers on connecting flights in the United States may also be subject to these screenings.
Why Did I Get An SSSS Code On My Boarding Pass?
If you have an SSSS code on your boarding pass, there may be several reasons why.
One reason is due to a random selection. There is no specific reason for the extra security measures.
Alternatively, you may have SSSS on your boarding pass because your trip itinerary may have been flagged. You may have visited a country that is considered high-risk. Or, your trip was flagged if you booked a one-way international flight at the last minute. This can be tricky for points and miles collectors who book flights when there is a good deal.
Another reason you may have to undergo the extra security is due to being on a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) watchlist. You could also have a name similar to someone on their watchlist. Unfortunately, DHS does not disclose how they determine who is on their list.
What If You Have TSA PreCheck?
Unfortunately, SSSS will overrule any clearance with programs like TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. You will need to comply with the TSA to board your flight.
I’ve Had An SSSS Code On My Boarding Pass Several Times. Is There Anything I Can Do?
If you’re often finding an SSSS code on your boarding pass, fortunately, you can do something about it. The Department of Homeland Security Traveler Redress Inquiry Program (DHS TRIP) was created to help those who are often confronted when traveling. You’ll be assigned a Redress Number that can be used when you book your flights. However, it can take up to several months to get a response.
Summary
Finding an SSSS code on your boarding pass can be stressful as it is hard to know how much time it will take for your screening. It can also be nerve-racking, especially if you have connecting flights. The best thing to do is give yourself plenty of time and check your boarding passes as soon as they are printed to avoid surprises.
