There’s nothing worse than dropping your money on an eyeshadow palette for dark skin that turns out to be chalky and streaky with lousy pigment. While poor formulations are still circulating in the beautysphere, there are plenty of brands that have been on their A-game since the start and actually understand undertones (that’s you, MAC) and others that have brought out some eyeshadow smash-hits over the past few years (over to you, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Fenty, Huda, Beauty Bay, Pat McGrath Labs).
Then there’s brands like Uoma, founded by Nigerian born and LA/London based #boss Sharon Chuter, as well as others like Beauty Bakerie and Juvia’s Place, which have been specifically designed with melanin in mind. What’s emerged is an array of silky pigments, which glide on like a dream and fully show up to the party.
Shades have become more considered and inclusive – there are fewer of those dusty-looking bone colours that simply don’t work – and “nudes” or “neutrals” have become more democratic. Take NYX’s Warm Neutral palette, for example. It’s fairly cheap (£16 for 16 shades), cheerful and it caters to all skin tones. There are a few beigey shades scattered in there, but it’s also packed with chocolates, caramels, golds, bronzes, and coppers that work beautifully on deeper skin tones.
Huda Beauty and Fenty Beauty set an example by showing swatches of pigments across different skin tones on their websites, allowing you to see how the product might work on your skin before you click *add to basket* and, thankfully, other brands have followed suit.
However, if we’re talking about pigment, we can’t fail to mention the queen of intense colour deposit – aunty Pat, founder of Pat McGrath Labs and international makeup legend. We’re currently obsessing over her latest launch Pat McGrath Labs MTHRSHP MEGA: Celestial Odyssey, in part for its opulent packaging but also for the high quality formulas.
And while the classic smoky eye remains a hero, bolds and shimmers are back. The ‘gram is awash with crazy colourful eye looks from purple cut creases, camo-coloured creations, shimmery carnival brights for party season and blended-out jewel-tones.
These are the best eyeshadow palettes for dark skin, with pigments that truly pop…
