Let’s face it; we could all do with some more annual leave. And now that Christmas and New Year are out of the way, it’s safe to admit that the final holiday of the year doesn’t feel much like a break at all. Between Christmas parties, present shopping, entertaining relatives, cooking extravagant meals and enduring the subsequent food comas, the past few weeks have left us all yearning for some proper relaxation.
To get through the January blues, most of us will be daydreaming about future holidays. In fact, research by the Travel Bulletin suggests that almost half of the British population (44%) book days off within the first week of January. Of that figure, 34% of respondents booked four to five days off, and 30% had booked a holiday for ten days or more.
If you’re one of many Brits booking time off in the coming days, we’ve got some calendar hacks to help you stretch 16 days of statutory annual leave to a massive 35 days away. Here’s what you need to know:
Easter weekend
This year’s Easter bank holiday falls on Friday, 7 April and Monday, 10 April. This means you can turn eight days of annual leave into 16 days off if you book from the 3rd to the 6th, and the 11th to the 14th of April.
That saves parents from having to pay the ever-increasing cost of childcare so they can work while the kids are out of school. It also means more time for Easter egg hunts, egg painting, hot-cross buns or a nice leisurely staycation if you so choose.
May Day and the King’s coronation
We already get the first Monday in May off for the May Day bank holiday, and then we’re gifted with an extra day of rest for King Charles’ coronation on Monday, 8 May. So, if you book four days off (Tuesday the 2nd to Friday the 5th), you get a ten-day break for the price of only four days of annual leave.
That’s more than enough time to enjoy a street party with your neighbours or leave the country to celebrate the new king while you’re being treated like royalty and taking fire selfies on a nice beach somewhere.
Summer bank holiday
It’s a great British tradition to go abroad in the summer holidays but unfortunately, once you leave school and start working, there never seems to be the same freedom to make elaborate plans with your friends and family.
Luckily for us, this year, we can turn four days of paid leave into a nine-day girls’ holiday, solo-trip, family or bae-cation by booking off Tuesday, 29 August to Friday 1 September.
Now we’ve got your holidays sorted for you, all you have to worry about is where you might go, what you might pack and what to wear. You’re welcome!
