These lymphatic-drainage massages will give you the best cheekbones of your life

If lymphatic drainage massage isn’t on your skincare radar, you’re missing a trick. Not only does the technique eliminate puffiness and promote radiance, it also helps to sculpt and define cheekbones like nothing we’ve ever seen before.

But giving some TLC to our lymph system goes way beyond good cheekbones, experts believe that it might also be the key to restoring, and maintaining, optimum health. In his new book, Lymph & Longevity: The Untapped Secret to Health, Dr Gerald Lemole describes the lymphatic system as a “secret river” of colourless fluid that flows through the lymph vessels, the tiny tubes of the body’s lymphatic system, carrying nutrients and important chemical messages to the brain and other organs.

This network of vessels connects to lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, stomach and groin which act as a filter, trapping or destroying toxins that predispose us to health problems. Inside these lymph nodes are lymphocytes, white blood cells that attack or break down viruses, bacteria and cancer cells. Meanwhile the lymph fluid ferries toxins and waste products to the liver and kidneys, where they are then safely disposed of by the body.

In fact, ensuring this system is working properly can help stave off Alzheimers and even, according to researchers, certain types of cancers.

And yes, lymphatic drainage massages can help your body work through this process more effectively. We know, it’s hard to believe that lying flat on a table while enjoying a relaxing massage could actually be the health component missing from your current routine, but sometimes things just aren’t too good too be true.

The question is, what actually is a lymphatic drainage massage? And how does it differ to a regular massage?

We’ve called upon A-list facialist Abigail James, who is one of the industry’s most revered skin and wellness experts (as her regular clients Arizona Muse, Sharron Horgan and Cher would attest to) to help explain everything you need to know about the essential facial technique.

What is lymphatic drainage?

Lymphatic drainage is a type of massage that follows the flow of the body’s lymphatic system to boost the body’s natural draining processes. The lymphatic system drains excess water, proteins, fats and toxics from body tissues down thin tubes (lymph vessels) to the lymph nodes (which can be found in our necks, armpits, and groin). The lymph nodes filter out all the bad stuff, blasting any bacteria or infection with white blood cells, as well as return the fluid to the venous system.

“A key element of lymphatic facial massage is the action of draining, which supports the lymphatic system – the hard-working part of our body that gets rid of toxins and excess fluids,” explains Abigail.  “It is a unique method that you’ll find more in the professional treatment space. I have personally trained in the Vodder Lymphatic Drainage Method, which I use in lots of my facials, including the Naked Facial. It’s a gentle method focusing on health and detoxification. The technique releases tension in muscles and connective tissues of the face, neck and head, which in turn reduces stress and improves facial contouring.”
