These tips and tricks could save us all from the dreaded chafe this summer

The sun is out in full force and with it comes a new wardrobe full of summer dresses, rosé by the bucket-load and, well, the much-loathed chafing.

It might not be the most glamorous of topics but you’d probably be lying if you said you’ve never experienced that pesky red rash between your thighs in the warm weather.

Thankfully we’ve called on an expert to help anyone suffering with the uncomfortable leg rub situation they might be experiencing in the heat.

As GP Dr Ross Perry, the Medical Director of Cosmedics skin clinics, explains: “Most of us will experience chafing at some point in our lives as it’s a common yet harmless skin problem and is often caused by clothes/fabric which can irritate you, friction and moisture. One of the most common areas of chafing is the inner thighs often caused by underwear being too tight or uncomfortable fabric, this then causes friction. Riding a bike also often causes friction due to the saddle rubbing against the fabric of our clothes and skin, horse riding, running and any other activity which combines sweating and repeated motion on the body can also cause chafing.”

The most common areas chafing can occur are on the thighs, bottom, nipples, feet, and armpits. The area affected tends to look red, sore and in worse cases can bleed and swell – sound familiar? If so, here are some simple hacks for beating chafe:

Tips for how to stop chafing

  • To prevent chafing, skin needs to be clean and dry. If your clothes are ill fitting and causing irritation then change to something more comfortable.
  • Vaseline works well to heal the area.
  • In worse case scenarios you can visit your GP who can recommend a topical steroid cream.
  • If you’re someone who suffers from frequent chafing you can add a soft bandage which will help to pad the skin.
  • When exercising wear suitable clothing, including shorts that are either padded or with a chamois if you’re a bike rider.
  • You can look to use chamois creams which contain anti-bacterial aids and will also prevent germs from clustering. Always take off sportswear when home and head for the shower to avoid bacterial build-up. Wear fresh shorts and comfortable underwear each time you ride a bike.
  • Got some old tights lying around? Why not cut them into makeshift shorts to don under your dress to absorb excess sweat.
  • Love a DIY remedy? Mix up corn starch and coconut oil. Corn starch absorbs moisture while coconut oil is soothing with anti-inflammatory properties; genius.
