Traditionalists look away now, because this engagement season we just cannot get enough of super unusual, one-of-a-kind style unique engagement rings.

Is it just us, or did almost every millennial either become engaged, announce a pregnancy or buy a dog in lockdown? Whether or not you personally succumbed to one (or more!) of the tempting trio, chances are that the increase in exposure to these momentous life moments over the last year has had you pondering your own trajectory.

And for those in committed relationships who’ve survived the ultimate test of being quite literally locked up with one another in total social isolation, with a (hopefully) blissful, cosy Christmas ahead of us a proposal may feel like a far more realistic prospect than it was pre-pandemic.

If you’ve been sensing that ‘the question’ may be imminent, you’ve likely been – at the very least – pondering what a ring on the finger may well look like for you. For the slightly less subtle among us, a direct link to the Pinterest mood board has no doubt been sent.

But for all the stunning solitaires and classic cushions adorning the fourth fingers of your nearest and dearest, there’s no denying the fact that it can be tempting to go a little more off-piste when it comes to engagement rings.

After all, weddings already hold so much tradition and formality that asserting your personality and individuality through the keepsake piece of jewellery that you’ll hopefully wear forever isn’t a bad idea.

But just how unique can an engagement ring really be?

Well they don’t have to incorporate a diamond, firstly. Why not experiment with others gemstones instead, we’re talking emeralds, rubies or sapphires? If it’s good enough for the Duchess of Cambridge…

If you’re keen on keeping the diamond element, see if there’s an unusual kind of band you like. ‘Gypsy’ rings are incredibly popular right now, which sees a chunkier band make way for a diamond to be set and mounted flush with the metal.

Pearl embellishment is also a great way to add your own spin whilst ensuring the piece remains timeless, while eternity-style rings – with smaller diamonds running throughout the entire band as opposed to one bigger main stone – are a unique and subtle choice for those less keen on major statement pieces.
