Jurgen Klopp post Southampton press conference

Thiago Alcantara scored his second goal in as many games for Liverpool on Saturday, as they hammered Southampton 4-0 at Anfield.

Anyone who’s admired his long, successful career will know what a talent the midfielder is – and it’s time he showed his best on Merseyside.

Injuries have hampered Thiago’s time at Liverpool, making just 20 Premier League starts last season – his first in England.

Much was expected of the Spaniard when he signed for Jurgen Klopp’s side for a reported £20million in September 2020 after impressive spells at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

The two-time Champions League winner arrived at Anfield with 11 league titles and five domestic cups – along with many other honours – to his name.

The creative midfielder stunned audiences in Spain and Germany with his outstanding technique, vision and passing ability.

If Jordan Henderson epitomises Jurgen Klopp’s gegenpressing philosophy, Thiago is a player for the purists.

On his day he can be a delight, and his recent goals prove this. His first, against Porto in the Champions League, deserves a place in the Louvre.

Running onto the ball – around 30 yards out – Thiago skimmed his effort across the turf like a kid dashing a pebble across a peaceful lake.

His strike against the Saints was similar in many ways – picking up the ball on the edge of the box – although not quite as fabulous.

Rather than hit it first time, he went past one defender with his first touch and then deceived another by rolling the ball onto his left before unleashing a strike.

Thiago was fortunate to see the ball deflect off a helpless Southampton player and into the net but it didn’t take the shine off his supreme skill. It was the talent at his very best.

“It’s special to score at this stadium but I am even more pleased with the win,” said Thiago after the Southampton victory. “We are pretty happy with our performance.”

Although it’s a joy to see the ex-Bayern ace do his thing, he needs to do it on a regular basis if he wants to leave his mark on Klopp’s iconic team.

Thiago has been linked with a return to Barcelona and it would be very easy for him to quit the Premier League for home comforts.

The midfielder has quashed these rumours. “100 percent I made the right choice to join Liverpool, the right move,” he said before the Porto clash.

“As I always have been, I am a guy who plays football – I am not concerned about the rumours. I’m focused on the duty I have with my team and the years I have in contract with my team.

“I just want to know about this new adventure that I have here in the Premier League and try to win all the trophies I can… my commitment is maximum with this team.”

It feels as if Thiago is at a crossroads in his Liverpool career. Perform between now and the end of the season – regardless of trophies – and he’ll be fondly remembered at Anfield.

If he continues to be plagued by injuries, however, he could go down as another world-class footballer who failed to truly show their best in the Premier League.

Thaigo might not be a typical Klopp player, but he should still become a Liverpool icon. It’ll be fascinating to see how he gets on during the coming months.
