This ‘90s bun hairstyle is going viral and it’s one of our favourite nostalgic beauty trends

It’s safe to say the internet is getting most of its hair advice from TikTok right now, and we’re not mad at the latest viral ’90s bun trend.

The nineties are big in beauty at the moment, and the latest trending look to hit TikTok is the definition of nostalgic. Admittedly, we weren’t sure we’d ever see this hairstyle again… but the internet has spoken, and it looks like the zig-zag parting is back, complete with claw clips and corkscrew curls, of course.

It’s all down to TikTok creator Shania (@shaniachristinad), who picked up over half a million views on her video creating the low-slung bun look, which she dubbed her “favourite hairstyle”.

First, she parts her hair into a zig-zag parting (think Mandy Moore circa 1999) before twisting her hair back with a flowery claw clip and leaving the ends loose to form the perfect ’90s bun. For the ultimate nineties texture, she then adds curls using a narrow-barrelled hair tong.

And for that extra-sleek retro look, she made sure to seal her parting down securely with pomade and an edges brush.

The post got plenty of comments from fellow nineties nostalgics, with one writing: “I used to wear my hair like this all the time… in high school, in the 90s,” while another TikToker added: “Be still my teenage heart.”

Our favourite comment? “You look like you would be a love interest in Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Now that’s a nineties aesthetic we can get on board with.

The nineties and noughties were full of iconic beauty moments, so we’re hardly surprised they’re making a comeback – as the next generation discovers the joys of ultra-brown lipliner, Spice Girls space buns and butterfly clips.

There’s plenty of other retro beauty trends that have already made the rounds on TikTok, too, from the 70s Donna Summer-esque blow-dry to 1950s rockabilly makeup. Which decade are we off to next?
