This A-list hairdresser says everyone needs a pre-summer hair detox – here’s how to do it in 3 simple steps

We have been told to tell you, that your hair is in need of a hair detox. Yes, we know, we’ve been longing for those long summer days too. While we’ve had a few days here and there of sun, the warmer months are still ahead of us (we hope and pray). We’re excited for the season of glowing tans and brighter hair. However, in the same way you must be sick and tired of hearing about the importance of prioritising your skin health over glowing tans, your hair too will need protecting.

The combination of sun, sea and sand can be very drying and lead to frazzled hair that’s crying out for a detox.

In fact, ghd Global ambassador, Zoe Irwin, who has worked with the likes of Little Mix and Missy Elliott, says every single one of us should be embarking on a season transition hair detox. “Post summer is the best time to refresh your hair routine and to give your hair a detox so that it can recover from environmental stress including over-exposure to the sun and chlorine, but it’s good to prepare your hair for all that sun exposure”, she says.

“The change in season can have repercussions on your hair health as well as your body and skin.” Right, that’s enough to convince us, so here is actually how you perform a hair detox, in three simple steps.

1. Try A Treatment

“Although the underneath section of hair isn’t the most exposed to damage in summer months, it does feel the effects of sun, sea and heat and is the part of your hair that will make your overall hair look and feel healthier if it’s looked after,” says Zoe. She recommends using a split end treatment, which helps bind broken fibres together to strengthen fragile and damaged hair. Use it every five washes before blow-drying and then use a hairdryer to seal it in.

Here are some of our go-to hair masks for banishing dry ends.

2. Invest In A Paddle Brush

“Paddle brushes are key in the seasonal transition period. The big, flat shape is smoothing and anti-static, so it’s the ideal fix for hair suffering from the wet and drying conditions of summer,” she says. Sweeping your paddle brush along the scalp lightly can help stimulate hair growth by improving blood circulation to the scalp. Paddle brushes are more gentle as the rounded ends ensure you cannot scratch the scalp and the evenly spread out plastic bristles cause less tension when detangling, avoiding damage to the scalp.

3. Massage Your Scalp

“Massaging your scalp daily for ten minutes has an incredible effect on the hair,” reveals Zoe. “It will relieve tension and also increase the blood flow for thicker, healthier, longer hair.” Ahh, mood.
