This wine was just named the best in Colorado

For the third time in the past four years, a wine made with an uncommon Italian grape has won the top honors at the Colorado Governor’s Cup wine awards.

Teroldego, which has its roots in northeastern Italy, has recently become more popular in the United States and among vinters in Colorado in particular.

“As a hardy grape that ripens early, [it] is ideal for withstanding Colorado’s hot summers and early frosts,” the Colorado Wine Industry Development Board, which organizes the annual awards event, Uncorked, said in a statement.

Seven-year-old Carboy Winery, which has locations in Denver, Littleton, Breckenridge and Palisade, won Best in Show on Friday, Nov. 4, for its Teroldego 2020. The wine beat out 11 other contenders that were part of the 2022 Governor’s Cup Collection.

“This is the second year in a row that Carboy has received the Best in Show recognition for its Teroldego and is the first time a winery has repeated as the winning wine in back-to-back years,” the state wine board said in a statement. Two other Carboy wines were also in the running.

“The uptick in quality achieved by the Colorado winegrowing community is a remarkable achievement. It is an honor to be a part of this community and I am excited for what’s in store for future vintages,” said Carboy winery co-founder Tyzok Wharton in the statement.

This year’s competition included 279 wines from 38 wineries — all of which were judged by “a panel of sommeliers, writers, and wine experts from around the country,” the board said. The top 12 wines from the competition become the 2022 Governor’s Cup Collection. Here is the list:
