After 2020, fashion got down with comfort wear—sweatpants, joggers, lounge pants, and the like. But are consumers ready for the more extreme, winterized version? Whether you’re outdoorsy or not, puffer pants might just be one of the most daring winter trends thus far, that is, if you’re brave enough to try them. And what’s not to like? They’re a no-brainer for those who spend their time in the mountains or cold climates; the down quilt provides a whole new level of warmth that surpasses snow pants. Though, per the Fall 2021 runways, you can wear these pants just about anywhere—on a wind-whipped stroll in the city or on your way to the ski chalet.
Julia Hobbs, Vogue Club’s senior fashion projects editor, took a Miu Miu pair for a spin on the streets of London; she described them as walking around in a “portable sauna.” And Miu Miu isn’t the only luxury brand getting down with the sleeping bag trouser trend. You can shop pairs from Telfar, Eckhaus Latta, and Jil Sander, too. It’s likely fashion brands drew inspiration from performance brands making gear and equipment for the outdoors—The North Face, Holden, and Moncler, as well as outerwear-first fashion brands such as The Arrivals and Ienki Ienki all have their own technical versions of the down pants. Any of their options would make for an on-trend way to keep warm for this season’s après ski or low-temp outdoor dining.
And if nothing else, the puffy quilted trouser will add an extra layer of fun fluffy comfort to your winter wardrobe. And who doesn’t love to feel swaddled?
