A new elephant reserve was inaugurated in Tamil Nadu by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav. This new reserve was inaugurated during a program in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala on the occasion of World Elephant day i.e. August 12, 2022.
The newly inaugurated reserve is an area of 1197 square kilometers in Agasthiyamalai. After Singphan ER in Nagaland, this will be the 31st ER in the country. The Singphan ER was notified in the year 2018.
Most of the elephant species are found in the Central and Southern Western Ghats, North East India, Eastern India, and Northern India, and in some parts of southern peninsular India. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES) is included in Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and in Appendix I.
In 16 states Indian elephants are found and the distributional range is showing an increasing trend across the country. Project elephant was launched to ensure that elephants and their environments are protected.
Based on the latest elephant census that was conducted in 2017, the population of elephants in the country has reached up-to 27,312. Although, the minister in his statement mentioned that the population of elephants has reached up to 30000, with around 29,900 individuals.
The 2017 census also states that Karnataka had the highest number of elephants 6,049. The second highest number of elephants was in the state of Assam (5,719), followed by Kerala.
