Chelsea v West Ham: Match in pictures

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Antonio Rudiger is set to leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

The German defender’s deal at Stamford Bridge is up at the end of the season, with the club failing to tie him down to a new one before sanctions were placed on the club’s owner Roman Abramovich. With Chelsea unable to process financial transactions due to the sanctions the Blues have been unable to renegotiate terms with Rudiger, and Tuchel has now issued an update on the situation.

It comes as the Blues beat West Ham thanks to a late Christian Pulisic goal. The United States international spared the blushes of teammate Jorginho after he missed an 87th-minute penalty – with Graeme Souness laying into his “pathetic” effort.

West Ham talking points

Christian Pulisic’s last-minute goal handed Chelsea a 1-0 Premier League win over 10-man West Ham and spared Jorginho’s penalty blushes.

Second-half substitute Pulisic swept home Marcos Alonso’s low cross to offer Blues teammate Jorginho a major reprieve, with the Italy midfielder having missed a penalty with just four minutes left on the clock in an incident that also saw West Ham reduced to 10 men as Craig Dawson was shown a red card. It was a match full of talking points, including Chelsea’s lack of attacking threat, second-half improvement and Tuchel’s telling decision.

Jorginho slammed

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness ripped into Chelsea midfielder for his “pathetic” penalty in the 1-0 win over West Ham.

Jorginho has made a name for himself with his technique and success from the penalty spot but registered a tame effort that was easily saved by West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski with just four of the 90 minutes remaining of Sunday’s Premier League encounter. And Souness gave a scathing review of the effort following the game as he labelled Jorginho’s attempt “exactly how not to take a penalty”.

Tuchel confirms Rudiger plans

Antonio Rudiger has told Thomas Tuchel he wants to leave the club, the Chelsea manager has confirmed.

Rudiger’s contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire at the end of the season and the defender has been linked with some of the top clubs from across Europe. The Blues’ third offerer to try and convince Rudiger to stay included a £230,000-a-week wage, but this wasn’t enough to convince the centre-back to sign a new deal before sanctions were imposed on the club.

That means the Blues are currently unable to get the deal over the line, with Tuchel confirming following the win over West Ham that Rudiger has told him of his intention to leave Stamford Bridge during a “private talk”.
