Thor: Love and Thunder has smashed records in Australia despite being ripped to shreds by film critics.
The 29th film in the Marvel cinematic universe, starring homegrown actor Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, has reportedly grossed $3 million at the box office on its opening day, according to The Daily Mail.
Reports claim it has become the highest opening day for a film in 2022 to date, the fifth biggest opening for a Marvel movie and the second highest opening day during the pandemic for a film in Australian theatres.
The success comes as a surprise given mixed reviews that flooded the web earlier in the week, including Forbes naming Hemsworth’s titular role “downright moronic” and the Hollywood Reporter likening the superhero film to a day at Disneyland.
“Thor’s home New Asgard has been turned into an amusement park and cruise destination offering Viking boat rides, real Asgardian mead and re-enactments of mythological lore — featuring famous faces in cute cameos. So we might as well be at Disneyland,” the publication said.
Even though the critics gave it a bashing, fans have expressed their thoughts on social media calling it a “masterpiece movie”.
“Superb movie. I have watched (it) 2 times in theatre … i enjoyed lot.. everything in this movie is best,” wrote one fan on Twitter.
“Amazing! I loved this movie, it was everything I expected!!!!” said another.
New Musical Express took the same stance, describing the nearly two-hour movie “tremendously entertaining”.
However, not all were convinced.
“Yeah cant believe Im saying it but the critics were right this time the movie really wasnt good,” posted one user.
“Just comedy and absolute disappointment” added another.
