Around 2,000 students from across the Bay Area are competing in the Tech Interactive’s annual Tech Challenge event this weekend at the nonprofit’s science and technology center in downtown San Jose.
Their challenge this year? Use their engineering skills to build a structure that can defend against extreme winds — not unlike the ones that pummeled the Bay Area during this year’s powerful atmospheric river storms.
“It has been a great year for making people aware of storms … and inspiring our youth to be climate scientists and environmental engineers,” said Abby Longcor, senior director of Tech Challenge.
Students from the 4th through 12th grade entered the event in about 500 different teams. Competitions are taking place through Sunday, and students are eligible for a variety of awards, ranging from best overall design to best use of materials.
The Tech Interactive’s center features hands-on activities, exploratory labs and design challenges with the goal of developing students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math. It’s also home to the largest IMAX Theater in California, showing educational films and the occasional Hollywood movie.
