The state’s slots parlor and two casinos cumulatively raked in about $92 million in gaming revenue last month, a haul that translates into more than $25 million in monthly revenue for the state, which has grown accustomed to steady gambling receipts.
The majority of gross gaming revenue in August was generated at Encore Boston Harbor in Everett. The Gaming Commission reported Thursday that the casino counted more than $58 million in August revenue, more than $14.5 million of which is due to the state. MGM Springfield reported monthly gross gaming revenue of roughly $22 million, about $5.5 million of which is bound for state coffers.
The slots parlor at Plainridge Park Casino counted about $12 million in revenue in August, which works out to about $5.86 million in taxes and fees for the state.
In all, the state can expect $25.88 million in gaming tax revenue and fees from August gambling activity. Since Plainridge opened in June 2015, Massachusetts has collected more than $1.181 billion from casino-style gambling.
Rail strike averted
Rail companies and their workers reached a tentative agreement Thursday to avert a nationwide strike that could have shut down the nation’s freight trains and devastated the economy less than two months before the midterm elections.
President Joe Biden announced the deal, which emerged from a marathon 20-hour negotiating session at the Labor Department and came just one day before the threatened walkout.
“This agreement is validation of what I’ve always believed — unions and management can work together … for the benefit of everyone,” Biden said in the White House Rose Garden.
The deal, which includes a 24% pay raise, will go to union members for a vote after a cooling-off period of several weeks.
