TikTok cheese pulled over infection fears

An internet favourite cheese featured in thousands of online videos has been urgently recalled over fears it could cause serious illness.

Australian-based That’s Amore Cheese announced on Tuesday it was recalling its burrata cheese 125g product due to contamination from listeria monocytogenes.

The serious infection can cause severe illness in pregnant women, unborn babies, babies, the elderly, and anyone who is immunocompromised, according to the NSW Food Authority.

“The general population can also become ill from consuming food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes,” the agency said.

“Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.

“Customers should also return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.”

The popular cheese was sold at independent grocery stores in NSW, Victoria, and Queensland, with use-by dates until June 22, 2023.

Burrata, an Italian cow cheese, has risen in popularity in recent years off the back of TikTok and other short internet videos.

It has a rich, buttery and somewhat salty flavour, tasting similar to Western cheese staple, mozzarella.

Burrata has increasingly been seen in restaurants across Australia, the US, and the UK.

It is one of 65 types of cheese produced by That‘s Amore Cheese in Victoria, according to their website.

The company was founded by Italian Giorgio Linguanti in 2008 before going in to win multiple food awards.

By 2018, the Thomastown-based factory had more than 100 staff and was exporting cheese to 10 countries.
