The reaction online to Tim Hortons pizza was swift and merciless.

The flatbread pizzas are in 20 test restaurants in the Toronto area and offered in three flavours: plain cheese, pepperoni and chicken parm; chicken parm pizza is an immediate red flag to purists, but never mind.

The doughnut afficionadi responded with fury that pizza is on the menu but chocolate eclairs and certain classic doughnuts are gone for good.

The basic complaint theme seems to be that Tims used to do one thing really well — doughnuts and coffee — and they’ve now abandoned that.

There was much high dudgeon from those who want to see the java fixed before the pizza gets added on.

And bring back those classic doughnuts!

Twitter erupted with insults at the pizza news:

“How do these a**holes not have room to bring back the walnut crunch?” asked one outraged customer.

Another posted, “If anything, you gotta respect Tim Horton’s persistence in making more forays into the realm of the inedible.”

Finally, “Remember when Tim Hortons announced its ‘Back to Basics’ plan focusing on coffee, doughnuts and breakfasts? Only two years ago? And now they’re trying out pizza? Can’t wait for sushi next year.”

The comments on Reddit were likewise pointed:

“You know what would be great? If their coffee didn’t taste like s**t and they didn’t stray even further from being a store to buy doughnuts and coffee from.”

One asked, “Is there a lack of options for pizza in Toronto? This just seems desperate.”

This consumer makes a good point: “Seriously. Why not do a new type of pastry or something? Try to be more like a boulangerie instead of a 7-11, for Pete’s sake.”

Many who wrote on Reddit wished fondly for a return to the days when Tims was respected for delicious fresh doughnuts and decent coffee.

“Gross. Maybe get the fundamentals of coffee and baked goods down before the pizza disrespect starts,” wrote one Reddit user.

“Tim Hortons has lost its goddamn mind,” summed up another.

Not all the comments were negative, however.

A Tims fan out west tweeted, “Why @TimHortons WHY??? Toronto doesn’t love you like Edmonton loves you. When are we getting the pizza???”
