Tim Tszyu has undergone suergery on his arm after being attacked by a dog just a matter of days before he fights for an interim world title on 18 June.
The 28-year-old son of boxing icon Kostya Tszyu was bitten by a dog on Sunday and had to go to hospital for an emergency operation.
The WBO interim super welterweight title is due to be on the line when Tszyu (22-0) takes on Carlos Ocampo (35-2) at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Queensland, Australia on 18 June, and the incident has thrown his preparation into chaos.
However, the unbeaten fighter’s manager, Glen Jennings, sounds confident that the bout will go ahead, saying: ‘The wound was superficial. The post-surgical report is all good.
‘There is no doubt that Tim will be ready and 100 per cent healthy and focused to take on Carlos Ocampo on June 18.’
No Limit Boxing CEO George Rose is also confident the fight will go ahead as planned, saying in a statement: ‘Like everyone, I was shocked and worried when I first heard the news.
‘It’s certainly not the ideal preparation anytime a fighter ends up in hospital a few weeks out from world title fight but the best news right now is that Tim is doing ok.
‘He has the best and most experienced team around him in world boxing.
‘They have reassured me he’ll be more than ready on June 18 to take on Ocampo. If they’re confident, I’m confident.’
Tszyu has already earned a crack at Jermell Charlo, who holds the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO super welterweight world titles, but the American is out with a broken hand.
He asked for a bout to be made in June in preparation to take on the 35-1-1 champ later in the summer, should all go well against Ocampo.
