Tim Vickery delivers Luis Diaz to Spurs verdict and potential Diego Carlos deal

South American football expert Tim Vickery finds it strange that Tottenham Hotspur are making a move for Porto winger Luis Diaz and has proposed another potential deal for the north London club.

Spurs are holding talks with the Portuguese club in an attempt to strike a deal for the 25-year-old Colombian winger.

Diaz is one of Europe’s hottest properties at the moment, with 16 goals and six assists from the left wing for the Portuguese side this season, including two strikes in the Champions League.

Now Vickery has given his take on the potential transfer and expressed his surprise at the need for the Colombian in Antonio Conte’s squad, despite the quality of the player.

“He’s very eye-catching. He’s a winger, usually a left winger cutting in on to his stronger right foot,” he told Sky Sports News on Thursday.

“He’s got a goal in him. This I suppose is the way that Tottenham like to do business, sniffing around right as the window is closing and come in with cheaper offers than the club would ideally really like to accept.

“My surprise with this deal is that while he’s a very fine player, you look at the Tottenham line-up at the moment and if you’re going to spend that kind of money, is that the area of the team that really needs strengthening?

“He will be a player who I can’t imagine playing as a wing-back. I know Conte loves his wing-backs and we all know the Victor Moses story and so on.

“He could play there I suppose but I don’t think he’s really got any track record for that. He’s a player for the front three.

“As a player who operates from the left going in to the right, that’s Son’s position. That’s not a position you urgently need to reinforce. I’m a little bit surprised with that.”

Vickery suggested there was another South American who Spurs should move for before the window closes.

“There could also potentially be progress with Diego Carlos, the Brazilian centre-back at Sevilla who was linked with Newcastle. There was a lot of money on the table for that,” he said.

“Maybe there could be a similar kind of move from Tottenham with the window closing, with perhaps Giovani Lo Celso, who did very well on the other side of the city with Betis, perhaps going in the opposite direction.”
