Titan rescue: A look inside the Titan submersible

Titan rescue: A look inside the Titan submersible

With few hours of oxygen left in the missing Titan submersible, rescue efforts continue of the five passengers who have been trapped inside since it submerged Sunday morning. Here’s a close-up look at the Titan:

  1. Pilot: The sub is steered using a modified video game controller that costs about $40.
  2. Hull: Is 5 inches thick made of carbon fiber, allowing it to withstand high pressures at the wreck of the Titanic.
  3. Electric thrusters: Two horizontal and two vertical thrusters allow it to travel at speeds of up to 3.45 mph.
  4. Weights: Allow the Titan to sink 2.4 miles below sea level.
  5. Toilet: Is located at the front separated from the rest of the crew by a thin curtain.
  6. Viewport: Is 21 inches of thick glass.
  7. Titanium cap: Is bolted on the hull before the expedition, sealing the passengers inside until they return to the surface.
