Titanic Sub: Lost at Sea Documentary Announced as Search for Missing Tourist Sub Continues

Amid the ongoing search for the Titan submersible that went missing near the Titanic wreckage site, a new documentary will chronicle the story. Per Variety, UK broadcaster Channel 5 has announced a new doc, dubbed Titanic Sub: Lost at Sea, which will be airing on Thursday. 5 News host Dan Walker will be serving as the presenter for the ITN-produced doc, which is said to “go beyond” what’s been reported about the voyage of the Titan, the tourist sub equipped with a four-day air supply that’s left search and rescue teams with minimal time to try and locate it.

“This program will chart everything from the exploration itself, to the rise of extreme tourism, to the rescue attempts, but above all it will tell a very human story that has captured the nation which is about 5 people, all with families, who are trapped at the bottom of the ocean,” ITN’s managing director of content, Ian Rumsey, said in a statement. “Our expertise and heritage in fast-turnaround documentaries and reputation for responsible filmmaking means we always treat such stories with great sensitivity.”

Five individuals are on the missing Titan, the submersible operated by OceanGate Expeditions. Those on board include Shahzada Dawood, a British-Pakistani businessman; Suleman Dawood, Shahzada Dawood’s 19-year-old son; British businessman and space tourist Hamish Harding; former French Navy commander and expert diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet; and OceanGate, Inc. founder and submersible pilot Stockton Rush.

The Titan went missing on Sunday, June 18. While many theories are abound, no one yet knows what happened to the sub, and extensive search and rescue efforts are ongoing. On Tuesday, banging sounds were detected underwater, which could suggest the presence of human life on the sub, but the source of the sounds hasn’t yet been located. The air supply on the sub reportedly has around 15 hours left as of this writing, projected to expire on Thursday.

The Search for the Missing Titan Continues

There has been criticism over the construction of the Titan, which includes using more “cost-efficient” parts, according to the OceanGate website. The company also touted the sub’s “groundbreaking engineering and off-the-shelf technology.” In response to the Titan going missing, OceanGate reps say that the focus right now is solely on the search and rescue operations.

“For some time, we have been unable to establish communications with one of our submersible exploration vehicles which is currently visiting the wreck site of the Titanic,” an official statement from OceanGate says of the situation, via People. “Our entire focus is on the wellbeing of the crew and every step possible is being taken to bring the five crew members back safely. We are deeply grateful for the urgent and extensive assistance we are receiving from multiple government agencies and deep-sea companies as we seek to reestablish contact with the submersible. We pray for the safe return of the crew and passengers, and we will provide updates as they are available.”

Titanic Sub: Lost at Sea airs on Channel 5 on Thursday, June 22, at 7 p.m. local time.
