The objective of the World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness about mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. In the recent years, an increasing acknowledgement of the important role mental health plays in achieving global development goals has been noticed, as illustrated by the inclusion of mental health in the Sustainable Development Goals. As a reminder, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are at the heart of the The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. It provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet for now and the future.
The stigmas around people with mental health conditions are severe, the same as discrimination and human rights violations. Mental health conditions can have a substantial effect on all areas of life, such as school, work performance, relationships with family and friends and the ability to live in society. Two of the most common mental health conditions, depression and anxiety, cost the global economy US$ 1 trillion each year. Unfortunately, the global median of government health expenditure that goes to mental health is less than 2%. Do people know that around 20% of the world’s children and adolescents have a mental health condition, with suicide as the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds.
This day provides an opportunity to talk about it loudly around the world. Some companies have committed themselves around this cause.
WHO works with Member States and partners to improve the mental health of individuals and society at large. This includes the promotion of mental well-being, the prevention of mental disorders, and efforts to increase access to quality mental health care that respects people’s human rights.
