Occasionally in these Wordle guides I like to take a trip down memory lane. History is filled with fire and blood, triumph and ruin, frivolity and regret. It’s never a bad idea to plump its depths. If you want to skip ahead to the Wordle Guide below, feel free!
On this day in history:
- 1884: Mark Twain’s most famous novel, The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn, was published in the UK and Canada. It would be another year before it was published in the United States.
- 1898: The US and Spain signed the Treaty Of Paris which brought the Spanish-American War to an end, though the fighting concluded in August of that year and the war didn’t fully come to a close until several months later.
- 1901: The very first Nobel Prizes were distributed, five years after the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel died. You may not know this, but Nobel invented dynamite.
- 1962: The film Lawrence Of Arabia, starring Peter O’Toole as T.E. Lawrence, premiered at Odeon Leicester Square in front of Queen Elizabeth II. At 222 minutes (at the time, before other versions cut the time down) the film became the longest ever to win an Academy Award for Best Picture—one minute longer than Gone With The Wind. It won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Director and Actor.
Famous Births:
- 1815: Ada Lovelace—daughter of the poet Lord Byron—was born. She was an English mathematician who studied machines and is now referred to as the first computer programmer. She studied the Analytical Engine of English inventor Charles Babbage (considered the first computer) noting that it “weaves algebraic patterns, just as the Jacquard-loom weaves flowers and leaves.”
- 1851: Melvil Dewey—the man responsible for the Dewey Decimal Classification for libraries—was born.
Famous Deaths:
- 1961: Soul singer and songwriter Otis Redding died in a a plane crash. He was only 26 years old.
- 2005: Comedian Richard Pryor died from a heart attack at age 65.
- 2006: Chilean General and murderous dictator Augusto Pinochet died while under house arrest before he could be tried for human rights abuses. He was facing over 300 charges. Among his fictional associates: Gustavo Fring.
Okay, let’s do this Wordle!
How To Solve Today’s Wordle (SPOILERS!)
The Hint: At one point, Walter White tells Skylar that he’s the one who does this.
The Clue: There’s a double letter in this word.
The Answer:
I feel pretty good about this one despite losing to Wordle Bot by one guess. He got his in three, but he also got lucky. I didn’t get quite as lucky, that’s all.
Besides, I prefer my opening guess—Hades, because Hades II was announced during The Game Awards Thursday evening—to Wordle Bot’s boring slate.
Of course, my guess left me with a whopping 389 possible solutions, which wasn’t great. Thankfully, point slashed that to just 14 and crown left me with just one—though it did take me a spell to figure out what it could be.
Fortunately for me, Heisenberg is dead so I’m the one who knocks now. Do you hear me, Wordle Bot? I AM THE ONE WHO KNOCKS!
Happy Saturday, dearest Wordlers! Have a great weekend!
