The answer to today’s Wordle (#408 – August 1, 2022) is quart. It’s a unit of capacity equal to a quarter of a gallon or 1/32 of a bushel, and it can also refer to a vessel having a capacity of one quart (via Merriam-Webster). Quart has roots in the Middle English and Anglo-French “quarte,” which means quarter. It also derives from the Latin words “quartus” and “quattuor,” which both mean four.
Today we solved the puzzle in five tries, a few more than the 3.9-guess average the WordleBot declared for the day. It looks like yesterday’s good luck was a one-off thing. We kicked things off with the word crane, the WordleBot’s favorite starter word. After trying roast, apart, and blart, we arrived at quart. It’d have been fitting to finish in four tries for the sake of the meaning of the word, but the WordleBot beat us to it today. We hope you finish in fewer tries.
