Tokyo Ghoul is an action-based, dark fantasy-driven story. Kaneki Ken lives his normal life as a college student before an unfortunate accident occurs on his date. His date just so happened to be a ghoul, a cannibalistic humanoid-like creature that survives on eating humans and other ghouls. After being crushed and operated on, he begins a tumultuous life as a half-ghoul.
As Kaneki’s adventure grows, he meets a handful of very important people who have a huge impact on his life. Later, Kaneki is taken by the CCG, The Commission of Counter Ghoul, who investigate ghoul-like instances and hunt down or imprison the culprit. This is where Kaneki turns into Haise, who acts widely different from Kaneki. All these people and ghouls helped Kaneki become the best version of himself, or at least a version that stands for peace and unity.
This article contains spoilers for the series Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul re:
10 Yusa Arima
Yusa, another half-human Ghoul Investigator, joined Kaneki in the Cochlea Raid after seeing the death of their squad leader. Yusa offered Kaneki support within the CCG and in the organization GOAT, as well as lends Kaneki man-power in some of the raids. Kaneki takes this in good standing and easily works with Yusa and his team for the remainder of his journey. Yusa eventually helps Kaneki establish the TSC, the Tokyo Security Committee. Kaneki accepts his willingness to work to keep the peace between the ghouls and the humans.
9 Shuu Tsukiyama
Kaneki and Tsukiyama are slow to friendship. Eventually, their mutual understanding gives way to recruitment into Kaneki’s close group of friends. Tsukiyama holds a great desire to protect Kaneki, and used his connections in the ghoul world to help him out greatly.
Tuskiyama becomes devastated when learning that Kaneki is dead. Soon, he meets a CCG Ghoul Investigator by the name of Haise, with whom he has a hesitant relationship with at first. Tuskiyama worries that uncovering Kaneki could be dangerous to Haise. Still, Tuskiyama ends up being a great help to Haise, and they successfully bring back his memories.
8 Yoshimura
Yoshimura is the second ghoul Kaneki meets, who runs a ghoul-centric coffee shop. He helps Kaneki process and learn to accept his ghoul side. Yoshimura was the first one to encourage Kaneki to understand that he belongs in the ghoul and human world and that his existence is rare, but he had the ability to do something great. The two form a very close connection so much so that Yoshimura trusts Kaneki with his greatest secret, Eto and the One-Eyed Owl. Kaneki does his best to fulfill the older man’s wishes.
7 Akira Mado
Akira took Haise in after Arima died. She mothered him, and the two had a very close familial relationship. When Haise was struggling when he wanted to get his memories back, she comforted him and reassured him that he is himself, and that is what mattered. Haise valued Akira heavily and trusted her. After being comatose, she became unsure of what to think about Haise not being Haise; however, Kaneki never changed his mind about her. Instead, he stayed firm in his love and admiration for her.
6 Kishou Arima
After Kaneki was defeated by Arima and taken into the CCG, he became Haise. Haise and Arima had a very close relationship, with Haise training by Arima’s side and often seeking out the older man for advice. Haise grew to care deeply about Arima and when Kaneki regained his memories, Haise was there to grieve over Arima’s death. However, despite their relationship, Arima was extremely harsh on Haise. The horrors that Haise had endured to fulfill his role as the One-Eyed King, were thankfully not in vain as Kaneki did take up the challenge successfully.
5 Kazuichi Banjou
Kaneki rescued Banjou from Aogiri Tree, a violent ghoul organization, and during their escape, Banjou learned to respect and befriend Kaneki. This led them to become a relatively strong team. Kaneki trusted Banjou enough to ask him to join his group. This leads to Banjou supporting Kaneki during the raid at Kanou General Hospital where the two take down dangerous ghouls.
Banjou is a dedicated and capable friend to Kaneki. Banjou ran the 6th Ward’s ghouls, helping everyone there to maintain order and keep control of the more violent ghouls. Due to this experience, he was a great help to Kaneki when it came time to establish the TSC.
4 Juuzou Suzuya
Suzuya is a fierce and violent ghoul investigator. He previously hunted Kaneki down when he was the One-Eyed Ghoul. When he first meets Haise, he does not let any sort of prejudice get in the way of potential team-ups or squad runs together. Haise respects Suzuya and often brings the latter snacks during the long meetings at the CCG.
As a nod to Kaneki, Suzuya pays Haise back for the money he stole from his past self. Haise and Suzuya’s relationship isn’t a close friendship, but a mutual respect that when the time comes, should they meet on opposite sides, both of them know what to do. It doesn’t come to that, and Suzuya joins Kaneki in helping keep the peace between humans and ghouls.
3 Koutarou Amon
The two met soon after Kaneki turned into a ghoul. When Kaneki spared Amon during their fight, the latter took time to self-reflect on his worldview. As a homage to Kaneki’s first fight with Amon, the man refuses to die, as Kaneki feared becoming a killer when he first navigated the ghoul world. That promise between the two of them is what kept their respect and friendship alive.
Many compare their similar relationship to another famous “team” in anime, Dazai And Chuya from Bungo Stray Dogs. While Amon and Kaneki were not as close, their bond and actions still heavily affected each other, allowing both of them to continue living and learning what it means to be a ghoul and a human.
2 Hideyoshi Nagachika
Hide is Kaneki’s best friend. Throughout the story, Kaneki remembers Hide and their friendship, which helps to keep him grounded and true to himself. When Hide and Kaneki lost communication, Hide was determined to become a Ghoul Investigator at the CCG. Hide strived to bring Kaneki home, as he values his friend’s safety.
Kaneki is constantly met with thoughts or flashes of Hide, and those ideas carry Kaneki to keep pushing forwards and fighting. Hide works hard in the background hoping to become someone who can save Kaneki. Eventually, Kaneki is reunited with his best friend and is filled with relief and sorrow. He states that he would help Hide and take on the consequences of his actions to repay him.
1 Touka Kirishima
Touka is the first ghoul Kaneki meets after turning. Although the two get off on the wrong foot, Touka eventually becomes one of the few people that understands Kaneki’s wish for the world of ghouls and humans. She teaches him a lot about his newfound ghoul life. They form an incredibly close bond, which leads to them eventually falling in love.
The two of them become a very strong duo, albeit one of them needs a little more rescuing than the other. (Hint: it’s not Touka). Kaneki heavily values Touka and everything she does for him. She was one of the few constants in his life after becoming a Ghoul. She remains that way until the end when both of them are married and have a child together.
