After weeks of reports and speculation about the breakdown of their 13-year marriage, Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen made their divorce official Friday, with the San Mateo-born NFL star saying that the breakup has been painful and difficult.
“In recent days, my wife and I finalized our divorce from one another after 13 years of marriage,” the seven-time Super Bowl winner wrote on Instagram. “We arrived at this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together.”
Brady said he and his supermodel wife arrived at this decision “after much consideration,” but doing so has been “painful and difficult.”
TMZ and People also reported that the couple have reached a settlement detailing their property split and terms of custody for their two children, Benjamin, 12, and Vivian, 9.
“We are blessed with beautiful and wonderful children who will continue to be the center of our world every way,” Brady added. “We will continue to work together as parents to always ensure they receive the love and attention they deserve.”
The divorce news follows months of widespread reports that Bündchen had become fed up with Brady’s career in the NFL, with the final straw coming after the quarterback reversed his announcement to retire and instead to play one more season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“(The problems) are 10 years old,” someone close to the estranged couple told People earlier this month. “This has been going on forever. This is nothing new to either of them.”
TMZ also reported that Bündchen, 42, has been threatening the NFL star, 45, with divorce for years, with his prolonged football career being the main source of her frustration. In the past, the couple managed to work through their difficulties, but Bündchen now “is done” with trying to make the marriage work, a source told People.
“She was upset about it for a long time, and it’s still difficult, but she feels like she needs to move on,” the source added to People. “She doesn’t believe that her marriage can be repaired.”
But even as Brady may have sacrificed his marriage for football, that professional aspect of his life hasn’t been going well. The divorce news comes after Brady suffered the first straight three-game loss in the last 20 years of his career, the Daily Mail said. Brady’s defeat occurred Thursday, after his team returned home to lose to the Baltimore Ravens 27-22, after a tough loss to the Carolina Panthers last week.
His father Tom Brady Sr. showed up at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa to support the quarterback, but Bündchen was nowhere to be seen.
The couple have been living separately since they reportedly had their huge fight over Brady’s announcement that he wasn’t going to retire.
The couple share a $17 million mansion in Miami, Florida, as well as a $3.6 million condo in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood.
Divorce documents are expected to be filed in Florida Friday, with the embattled couple’s attorneys working on the settlement for their divorce since early September.
