Luton Town have released a statement updating supporters on the status of their captain Tom Lockyer, after he collapsed away from any other player and was stretchered off in their Championship play-off final against Coventry on Sunday. The Welsh centre-back received treatment on the pitch before being taken to hospital near Wembley.
The club confirmed that Lockyer is responsive in a statement. “We are able to report that after collapsing on the pitch, Tom Lockyer has been taken to hospital for further tests,” the statement read. “He is responsive and talking to his family, who are with him. We are all with you, Locks #COYH.”
He was replaced early into the game after stumbling when running backwards towards his own goal, clutching his leg and appeared to suffer a serious injury that caused a lengthy delay to the first half.
Players were told to give the medical team some space to help the Luton skipper, before he was stretchered off to the medical room and his parents came down from the stands to be with their son.
He has since been transported to a nearby hospital as supporters have made sure to send their well-wishes to the defender. On Twitter, @afcjamxs wrote: “Glad to hear Tom Lockyer left the pitch conscious, wishing him all the best.”
While @samlee2508 added: “Thoughts go out Tom Lockyer who been stretched and after collapsing! Moments like this Football has no colours. Wish him speedy recovery.”
Several fans online sent their thoughts and prayers to the Welshman, as @VWHPortsmouth tweeted: “Wishing Tom Lockyer a full and speedy recovery. Our thoughts too with the entire team and their supporters.”
Supporters of other clubs made sure to put any rivalries aside to hope for the best for Lockyer as he continues to receive treatment in hospital. On Twitter, @WrexhamFCFans wrote: “Wishing you a speedy recovery and spending our well wishes from Wrexham, Tom.”
While Ipswich Town sent a message of support accompanied by a blue heart emoji: “Sending our best wishes from everyone at #itfc.”
