Jake Paul gives his take on Tommy Fury’s next fight

Tommy Fury has thanked his dad for comparing him to world champion Gennady Golovkin – and didn’t shy away from the comparison.

Fury looks to extend his professional unbeaten run to eight fights against Daniel Bocianski on the undercard of his brother Tyson’s world title fight with Dillian Whyte. It marks Fury’s first fight this year having pulled out of a clash with Jake Paul last December.

Speaking at Wednesday’s press conference, John Fury said of his son: “He’s sharp, he’s strong. I also see shades of Golovkin in there as a younger man. He’s stepped up to the plate and got a 10-1 opponent. You’ll see a different Tommy this time.”

Golovkin is regarded as one of the best middleweights of his generation and picked up his first win in eighteen months earlier this month by knocking out Ryota Murata. Fury responded to his dad’s comments and admits he sees similarities between himself and ‘Triple G’.

“Thanks very much dad, appreciate the support,” he said. “That’s come from what they’ve been seeing in the gym. David [Adeleye] has been in camp and watching me sparring. They’ve been giving me some very good fighters, when I take sparring into the ring you’re going to see what I can do.

“We don’t get people that I can knock over in sparring and have easy spars. I’ve not had one easy spar my entire life. At 15 years old I was sparring Tom Aspinall, who’s now number two in the UFC or something like that, having full trade offs with him and I was 10 stone.

“I know what I’ve got inside of me. I’ve got the heart of a lion, balls like King Kong, we all have in this family. You’re gonna see it, only me and my team know this. Shades of Golovkin is a very nice compliment and I see it myself.”

The 22-year-old has big boots to fill if he wants to match the success of Golovkin. The 40-year-old won his first world title just four years into his professional career and has only one loss after 44 fights.

Fury, who turned professional in 2018, has been criticised for the level of competition he has fought. The Brit went four rounds with Paul’s sparring partner Anthony Taylor last August. Fury’s fight with Bocianski on Saturday marks just the second time he has been scheduled in a six-round fight.
