Tottenham ace Son Heung-min explains £51m Saudi snub as Lloris ‘explores’ move

Tottenham star Heung-min Son has revealed that he has no intentions of heading to Saudi Arabia this summer as he wants to continue playing in the Premier League. Like numerous players, the forward has been the subject of interest from the Middle East but has insisted that he has not had his head turned at this stage.

The Saudi Pro League have been keen to raise the profile of their competition by targeting top talents from around Europe – with the prospect of earning lucrative wages in the Middle East proving decisive in negotiations with a number of players.

Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante and Roberto Firmino are among the top-quality players to make the move to Saudi Arabia – and Son has also been approached in the hope of capitalising on Spurs’ failure to qualify for Europe last season.

However, the 31-year-old has revealed that he intends on staying with Tottenham for the foreseeable future. Asked about reports linking him with Saudi, Son replied: “Probably if I wanted to go there I would be out there, not here. (Laughs).

“I love playing football, obviously money is also important. I dream of playing in the Premier League and still a lot of things to do. I’m looking forward to it this season and obviously, especially last season when I suffered physically.

“So this is not Sonny that I know. I want to prove this season that I’m the Sonny that we all know. I want to prove that to myself and I want to give back to the club where I belong. Saudi – most people are going at the moment which is really, really interesting but it’s a dream for me to play in the Premier League and I’m looking forward to this season.”

In contrast, Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris is reportedly exploring a move to Saudi Arabia after publicly declaring that he would like to leave the club this summer now that he is in the final 12 months of his contract at Spurs. According to 90min, the former France international has offers on the table from the Middle East but is biding his time to see if interest from European sides emerges.

Ange Postecoglou has already replaced Lloris at Spurs, bringing in Guglielmo Vicario on a five-year deal, paying £16.3million for the services of the Italian shot-stopper after negotiations with Brentford for David Raya broke down due to a significant gulf in valuations.
