Tottenham fans to foot the bill to keep Harry Kane as Daniel Levy ‘plan’ emerges

Tottenham fans will foot the bill to keep Harry Kane at the club for the final year of his contract as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is set to raise the price of some match tickets by a staggering 20 per cent. Tottenham announced their intentions to freeze season ticket prices earlier this year in the midst of the cost of living crisis – but the same can’t be said for tickets which are purchased on a match-by-match basis.

Tottenham endured a miserable campaign last time out as they suffered a torrid run of form throughout the second half of the season and ended up finishing eighth in the Premier League table. They will be hoping to kick-on this time around after appointing Ange Postecoglou as their new manager over the summer.

But their success could hinge on whether Kane stays at the club. Kane would be free to leave Spurs for nothing next summer when the contract he signed way back in 2018 finally comes to an end. The England captain has been heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich during the current transfer window after Manchester United’s interest was halted by Levy.

But Levy appears intent on holding onto the blockbuster star for one final season. And the Spurs chairman looks to be using ticket prices as a way to claw back some of the money his club will lose by not cashing in on the striker.

Last season, Spurs charged £65 for an average seat at a Category A fixture but have increased that to £78 this time around, marking a meteoric rise of 20 per cent. And they have also bumped their home clash with Newcastle up from Category B to Category A to maximise their returns.

The new ticket prices haven’t gone down well with some fans. And a statement from the Tottenham supporters’ trust in reaction to the news read: “The club is aware THST lobbied for a price freeze on all match day pricing and, having been informed this [Friday] morning, we along with the wider fanbase have been told rather than consulted. This must change if dialogue is to happen and supporter input is genuinely desired.

“The club knows this is something THST cannot support and we feel an increase of this magnitude is excessive. Our match tickets are already amongst the most expensive in the Premier League and fans should not have to dig further into their pockets when they are already seeing their living standards squeezed by the cost-of-living crisis.”

But Tottenham responded by telling the PA news agency: “We are fully aware of the current rising cost of living – and as such are one of only three Premier League clubs to freeze season ticket prices for the coming season. Our match ticket prices are comparable to other London clubs, with a wide range of price points available for fans to choose from.”
