Tottenham’s reported plan to include Sergio Reguilon as a ‘wildcard’ option in a swap deal for Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak has been dismissed as ‘not realistic’ by Spanish media. The left-back is currently on loan at the La Liga club and there was believed to be hopes that Spurs could use the carrot of signing him permanently in a deal for the Slovenian – but he is yet to play for the club through injury, putting Diego Simeone off a long-term deal.
Spurs have been well served in the goalkeeper position for much of the last decade with club captain Hugo Lloris proving to be a consistently reliable presence between the sticks. However, he is now 35 years old, forcing Antonio Conte to consider how to address the position in the long-term before the Frenchman eventually reaches an inevitable decline.
Oblak is considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in world football given his record for Atletico, and has been touted as the perfect option for the north London side. He has made 360 appearances since joining the club from Benfica in 2014, keeping a hugely impressive 177 clean sheets in that time.
He has recently signed a new contract at the club which will keep him in Madrid until 2028. However, the door for a departure has been left ajar, with the new deal believed to include a lower release clause than the £107million that had previously been written into his agreement.

Reports had implied that Spurs could offer Reguilon to the La Liga giants permanently in order to bring down the ‘keeper’s price. However, these suggestions have been quashed by the Spanish media. The left-back was signed by Simeone towards the end of the summer transfer window but is yet to make an appearance as a result of an injury.
Mundo Deportivo was the publication to pour cold water on the suggestions that Atleti could be tempted by the ‘wildcard’ option of Reguilon with the report stating there is no current scenario where the defender would be attractive to the club given his injury issues. As a result, any swap deal for Oblak does not seem like a ‘very realistic option’.
