Tourist slams top destination for crowds

The Mona Lisa might be the world’s most famous painting. For decades, tourists who visit the Louvre have joined hefty queues to catch a glimpse of the mysterious woman.

Is she smiling? Why doesn’t she have eyelashes? Has she lost her front teeth in an accident?

Whatever the answers, some tourists have said they will never see the Mona Lisa as they can’t stand the thought of the queues at the Louvre gallery in France.

A tourist shared a photo of the long and chaotic queue of people waiting to see the Mona Lisa on Reddit.

Another traveller ‘sanfran54’ was immediately put off, saying: “Well that would keep me from ever visiting.”

The Louvre gallery started capping visitor numbers last summer and has kept the policy in place.

However, the cap still admits 30,000 people per day, adding up to a whopping 7.5 annual visitors.

While the Louvre houses around 35,000 works of art, the majority of visitors are heading straight to the Mona Lisa.

Another tourist said: “They just let everyone crowd in and elbow their way to the front. Really stupid.”

One person said: “I honestly wouldn’t even mess with that. I don’t need to be able to say I’ve seen the Mona Lisa.”

Tourists put off by the Mona Lisa’s notoriety could check out one of the quieter rooms at the Louvre. One person said: “The Louvre has so much to see on every wall, floor and ceiling so the visit as a whole is totally worth it.”

The Louvre might be the city’s most famous, but Paris is home to plenty of other amazing and less crowded museums.

At Musee Carnavalet, tourists can explore the history of Paris and they don’t need to pay a penny for entry.

The Musee de l’Orangerie is home to Monet’s Water Lilies series and attracts far fewer crowds than the Louvre.
