The Corolla Hybrid uses a 1.8L four-cylinder engine with self-charging hybrid system, generating a combined 121 horsepower. The new all-wheel-drive (AWD) system uses a separate rear electric motor that powers the rear wheels — a system similar to the one used on AWD versions of the Prius. The motor powers the rear wheels when accelerating from a stop, and when needed for traction if the front wheels slip, or during cornering.
