Toyota is recalling more than 13,800 examples of its new Corolla Cross in Canada – along with 96,000 or so examples in the U.S. – over concerns a defect may keep the front-passenger airbag from deploying during a collision. Toyota Corolla Cross vehicles from model years 2022 and 2023 may be affected if equipped with the non-hybrid engine.
On affected vehicles, a manufacturing error in the instrument panel may keep the passenger airbag from going off when it should, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. The automaker is asking owners of affected vehicles to keep passengers out of that front seat until they’ve had their Corolla Cross repaired.
Dealers will inspect the instrument panels in affected Toyotas and, if necessary, replace them. Owners of vehicles covered by the recall will be contacted by late July.
