“We’ve only just begun to scratch the surface of the Beyond Zero moniker,” said Toyota group vice-president and general manager David Christ. “With intuitive tech features never before seen in a Toyota model, the BZ Compact SUV Concept showcases another possible vision of the very near future with our battery electric vehicles.” And by “very near future,” we think he means that something remarkably close to this BZ concept will be found in Toyota dealerships within the next 18 months.
In the exterior styling department, the BZ Concept – the automaker stylizes it with a lower-case ‘B’, but not us – appears remarkably similar in silhouette to the Lexus RZ unveiled this past spring as a 2023 model. That’s explained by the fact it’s probably based on the same e-TNGA platform as the Lexus, and Toyota’s own BZ4X — despite that, its interior is a marked departure from any Toyota or Lexus that’s gone before.

From its rectangular wheel to its less-is-more Spartan interior design, the BZ Compact SUV Concept’s cabin may be the ultimate in automotive minimalism. Toyota calls it “clean-vital.”
This Concept would appear to be just another minor cog in Toyota’s plans to spend US$17.6 billion on batteries and electric vehicle development by 2030, the company vowing to have 30 fully electric vehicles for sale by 2030, five of which will fall under the Toyota “BZ” sub-brand. Toyota also says it will be completely carbon-neutral by 2050. After that, I guess the goal is beyond zero.
