The Transformers franchise is looking to continue the huge success of Bumblebee with this year’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, but it seems that director Steven Caple Jr. already has his sights set on multiple sequels, all with the movie’s villain Unicron as an all-powerful threat similar to the MCU’s Thanos.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is one of the most anticipated entries in the franchise, bringing the Maximals, Predacons and Terrorcons into the live-action Transformers universe. After the soft-reboot/prequel of Bumblebee, the new movie jumps into the 1990s, with two humans finding themselves caught up in another struggle between various factions of the robots in disguise.
While discussing the upcoming movie with Den of Geek, Caple Jr. revealed that the introduction of Unicron is something that he hopes to be able to build on in future, although as of yet he has not been attached to any future Transformer project. He said:
“I introduced Unicron. I was dying for Unicron to show up in a live-action movie, and to be honest, I’ll put it out there, I want him to be across the next two or three films, a really huge major villain. I feel like we spent a lot of time on Earth, and it’d be interesting to see what else is out there, there are different Transformers and different planets, and we just need the right vehicle and the right team to really do it. I feel like this was the foundation of that, of something really special.”
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Looks Set To Be One Of The Best In The Franchise.
Before the release of Bumblebee, the Transformers franchise seemed to be falling into a repetitious place, with critics having never liked the franchise and audiences starting to lose interest in watching robots bash each other around the head in a flurry of Michael Bay explosions. However, Bumblebee was a different movie, and its biggest move was to push the franchise back into the 1980s, something that can always help grab a certain audience. Now Rise of the Beasts will continue to focus on developing something more than the original movies offered in terms of story, while continuing to deliver those thrills of metal of metal.
First reactions to Rise of the Beasts have been hugely positive, with many praising the film in a very similar way to Bumblebee. The 90s setting and music, eye-popping special effects and a game changing set-up for the future of the franchise seems to be the common thread running through the early reviews, and if that doesn’t make Rise of the Beasts one of the biggest Transformers movies in recent years, then nothing will.
Whether Caple Jr. gets his wish to continue with the story in another instalment or several is something that is yet to be decided, but at the moment, things are certainly looking positive about the arrival of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts on June 9.
