Travel expert on when Canary Islands holidays ‘drop in price’

With flight prices soaring, many Britons are struggling to book a holiday this year. A holiday expert explained how to save money on a break this year and the key time to book a break in one of Spain’s most popular hotspots.

Rosie Panter, travel expert at price comparison site dealchecker.co.uk, shared her best money-saving tips for British tourists.

She said: “We tend to see the best deals on destinations as they come in and out of season. So the Canary Islands are incredibly expensive over winter but drop in price as other destinations warm up in spring.”

Due to their proximity to the Equator, the Canary Islands often enjoy warm temperatures during the winter while the temperature drops across the rest of Spain. This means that many British tourists holiday there during winter but go for other hotspots such as Alicante in the summer.

However, the islands remain warm during summer reaching average highs of 28 degrees during peak summer.

Rosie also recommends British tourists check out Malta and Corfu for a better deal during the summer months.

Turkey and Egypt are also fantastic options for “wallet-friendly” prices during summer 2023, according to Rosie. Egypt was also named one of Post Office Travel Money’s best value holiday spots for this year.

While a cheap holiday deal can be extremely tempting, Rosie said it’s important to look at the fine print before pressing the button.

She said: “I think the price of a deal needs to be weighed against how nice the accommodation is and what your experience will be like while you’re there. A cheap price isn’t worth an awful holiday.”

Cheap deals might be cheap for a reason and Britons should check out holiday review sites before they book a trip. A dodgy hotel could ruin an otherwise great trip.

Rosie added: “If a deal looks too good to be true, it’s well worth checking it against competitors. Are those flights available elsewhere? Do prices vary significantly from site to site? These are both big red flags, beware!”

A deal that seems too good to be true may well be a scam which could leave British tourists out of pocket.

Rosie said: “Check a company’s ATOL and ABTA registration against the ATOL and ABTA websites themselves to ensure that they line up. Your money is much safer with companies with these accreditations.”

Package holidays should be registered with ATOL or ABTA to prove the company can be trusted.

ATOL will protect customers and their money if the firm they have booked the holiday with ceases trading. ABTA will cover travellers if their holiday provider goes bust and tourists can also get help with complaints if needed.

Tourists could also check out reviews of the holiday company if they’re concerned a deal might be a scam.

A package holiday could also be a more “cost-effective” way to travel, according to Rosie. She said: “All-inclusive holidays are looking really cost effective this year, and these tend to be cheaper packaged up than bought separately.”

All-inclusive holidays can take the stress out of booking and could be a great option for a family break.

Tourists should read the terms and conditions to check exactly what’s included before they book a trip.

Some holidays will include an unlimited number of alcoholic drinks while at other resorts tourists will be subject to a different rule.

Travel experts advise Britons to buy travel insurance as soon as they book to make sure they are covered if anything goes wrong before they travel. Insurance policies do differ so make sure to read the fine print to find out exactly what coverage is included.
