Travel expert reveals common mistake all tourists make that attracts pickpockets

TOURISTS have been warned that they are attracting pickpockets by subconsciously showing them where their valuables are kept.

The mistake is a common problem across Western European cities, where signs warning of pickpockets are regularly displayed.

Rebecca Baldwin, a self-confessed travel expert who has lived all over the world, said on Quora: “This is one tourists never realise. In Western Europe when you get off the subway, there are huge signs that warn you about pickpockets.

“When the subway stops and tourists immediately see these signs, they stop in their tracks and check their most valuable possessions.

“They check for their money, credit cards and passport by touching their trousers, coat pocket, or purse where their valuables are.

“They will even check their neck and wrists to make sure their necklaces and watches are still there.

“Well, what they don’t realise by doing this is they’ve actually told pickpockets and other thieves where their valuables are.

“People in pickpocket rings on the subway will signal the other pickpockets waiting right under those signs and they’ll follow you for a bit and take your currency or keepsakes.

“So, keep your things safe by putting them in unusual places and don’t check for them on the subway or when getting off – you’re just telling everyone where your good stuff is.

“And don’t wear expensive jewellery out during the day, as it’s just stupid to do that and too easy to get a nice necklace yanked off your neck.

“Even wealthy people rarely wear expensive jewellery when sightseeing.”

The issue of pickpockets isn’t exclusive to cities, as Brits heading for the party hotspot of Magaluf this summer are being warned of gangs of violent pickpockets who are honing in on tourists now returning to Spain.

Local residents say “all the old problems” have already returned as the season swings into action, despite efforts by the Balearic government to change the venue’s image.

They have reported numerous robberies with violence to the police following the massive arrival of tourists, particularly the Brits, French and Swiss.

The main problem area is again the famous Punta Ballena strip in Magaluf which is lined with pubs and clubs.

The resort is one of the areas subject to tough new rules including a ban on pub crawls, two for one alcohol offers, drinking in the street and unruly behaviour.
