Topline
Trump Administration officials found wads of printed papers clogging a White House toilet on multiple occasions during former President Donald Trump’s presidency, and think Trump is the one who flushed the documents, according to a scoop from New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman’s upcoming book shared with Axios Thursday, though Trump quickly denied the report.
Key Facts
Flushing presidential papers would be in clear violation of the Presidential Records Act, and Haberman’s report comes the same morning as the House Committee on Oversight and Reform’s launch of an investigation into Trump after 15 boxes of presidential records were recovered at his Mar-a-Lago residence.
Trump called the toilet allegation “categorically untrue” in a statement released Thursday.
Bloomberg’s Jennifer Jacobs confirmed Haberman’s reporting Thursday, calling it “100% accurate,” and White House staff found “clumped/torn/shredded papers” believed to be flushed down the toilet by Trump.
Haberman rose to prominence covering Trump’s presidency for the Times, and her book Confidence Man will be released this fall, she announced Thursday.
Surprising Fact
Trump has continued correspondence with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un even after leaving office, according to Haberman.
Tangent
Trump said during a 2019 roundtable with small business leaders, “People are flushing toilets 10 times, 15 times, as opposed to once,” apparently referring to low-flow sinks and toilets, though he didn’t provide context for what caused the excessive flushing.
