Tsimikas display puts Robertson’s place at risk as Trent faces more questions

Kostas Tsimikas was the best player on the pitch during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Ajax, according to ex-Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara.

And the Greek’s form might have Andy Robertson sweating over his place in the Reds starting XI along with fellow full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Could he usurp Robertson in the starting XI?

Liverpool were not back to their best but an 89th-minute header from Joel Matip secured a much-needed victory over Ajax following the 4-1 humbling against Napoli.

The return of Thiago Alcantara helped inspire a much-improved Reds performance after a shaky start to the 2022/23 season – but Tsimikas stood out from the rest.

Particularly because there are ongoing doubts about the form of Robertson, who missed the game due to injury.

Tsmikas, affectionately named the ‘Greek Scouser’ by fans, created five chances on Tuesday, the most of any player on the pitch – and it was his corner which supplied the winning goal.

He currently averages an assist every 75 minutes this season and continues to make a strong claim for a regular place in the starting XI.

Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold continued to look lost on the right side, failing to provide a spark in attack and finding himself exposed in defence.

Suddenly, there are very real questions over two full-backs who were widely considered among the best in world football a matter of months ago.

O’Hara told talkSPORT: “Tsmikias… his defensive runs, his recovery runs were brilliant.

“He was the best player on the pitch and he got his team out of trouble.

“I’m watching Trent, Ajax are hitting long balls and I’m like, ‘Where’s Trent? He’s still not back!’

“He’s going back like I’d run back. It’s not good enough.”
