Thomas Tuchel on race for Champions League spots

The feeling of uneasiness around Chelsea has been building for weeks and weeks.

Not only is the club having a challenging spell away from the pitch, but on the field performances have dropped off significantly. And after last week’s 1-0 loss to Everton, there is a simmering concern that a spot in the top four may not necessarily be guaranteed for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

This weekend the Blues can effectively end those worries when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge. Ahead of next week’s FA Cup final against a red-hot Liverpool side, it feels key the team find some momentum from somewhere.

Mirror Sport has your latest Chelsea news, as the team seek to finish what has been a campaign to forget on a high.

Tuchel hopeful of ownership resolution

Tuchel has said he is confident the club will find a resolution to the ongoing ownership saga, as he has been given a positive update.

Chelsea need to find new owners before the expiration of the special operating licence imposed by the government since March 10. That came after the club were sanctioned due to alleged links between former owner Roman Abramovich and Russian president Vladimir Putin.

It has been reported last week that Tuchel has been told Todd Boehly’s consortium had been handed preferred bidder status by the Raine Group and the manager provided an update from his point of view on Friday.

“I’ve been told last week that we have a preferred bidder and things are going forward,” Tuchel revealed. “It’s a pretty important week for the club, but I was fully focused on the pitch. But after what I heard last week I’m confident.

“Clearance is always the best, because when the situation is clear you can take actions, make judgements, take actions. Otherwise you’re in a passive role, and this is what we are right now.”

Lukaku still expected to play ‘important’ role

Tuchel believes Romelu Lukaku can still play a big part at Stamford Bridge in years to come despite the struggles he has endured since returning to the club.

Chelsea spent £97.5 million to land the striker from Inter in the summer and he was expected to propel the team to a different level. However, he’s struggled to show his best form and at the moment Kai Havertz and Timo Werner lead him in the pecking order.

Some speculation has surfaced relating to a possible summer transfer as a result, but Tuchel is adamant that Lukaku can still have a positive impact at Chelsea.

“Always I want him to be an important part,” he said. “Right now he is an important part of the squad next season. There are no players set to depart or improvements because of the situation.

“We signed a big player, we still have a big player. He didn’t come on [against Everton] because we had three subs and had to use one for Jorgi at half time. He trained very well and maybe starts tomorrow.”

Real Madrid success can give Chelsea cash boost

Although he’s not really been involved in Real Madrid’s remarkable run to the Champions League final, former Chelsea player Eden Hazard may help his former club get a cash boost should Los Blancos triumph against Liverpool.

Hazard was renowned as one of the best players on the planet when he joined Madrid in 2019, although his time at the Santiago Bernabeu has been destroyed by a succession of injuries.

Nevertheless, as part of the deal struck between Chelsea and Real, if the Spanish giants were to win the European Cup then that would trigger a clause that would in turn see the Blues receive an extra payment.

According to reports, Chelsea would pocket around £20 million in bonuses if Carlo Ancelotti’s side add the Champions League to their La Liga success.
